How to Apply Freelance Writing Jobs At Indeed

Applying for freelance writing jobs on Indeed can be intimidating, especially if you are just starting out in the industry. The job postings have their own terms and conditions, some of which you may not even be aware of until after you submit your work samples to the client. But don’t worry; we have all the insider tips on how to apply for freelance writing jobs at Indeed so that you’ll be able to get past the posting and on to the next step – making money!

Log into your account or Sign Up

Just as you should prepare a resume and portfolio before applying for a traditional job, it’s also best to be prepared when applying online. First, create an account on Indeed if you don’t already have one. It doesn’t cost anything, and it only takes a few minutes. While you can find some freelance writing jobs in other areas of Indeed’s site, it’s best if you sign up specifically to look at freelance writing jobs. Once logged in, check out your dashboard. Here is where you can find new postings and edit your profile (which I will cover in detail below). If you want to start browsing immediately, click Jobs under your username in the top right corner. If not, read on!

Go through the first round of applications

It’s important that you apply through every round of applications possible. It may be tempting to skip ahead, but many freelance writing opportunities will expect multiple submissions. The first round usually only takes a couple minutes and if you’re applying as quickly as possible, you’ll save yourself time by not having to go back and submit again later. Most companies don’t say how many rounds of applications there are, so just keep checking back until all your information is complete. It might seem tedious now, but it’ll make finding more freelance writing jobs much easier in the future.

Finalize and submit your application

From your dashboard, select My Account > Applications. (If you don’t see an Applications section, go ahead and create an application.) Next, you can choose to apply or upload a resume or cover letter if you have one. Otherwise, move forward with submitting your application by clicking Save and Continue. When you’re done creating your application, click Submit Application in order to submit it for approval. If you’re logged into Indeed Prime, the information from your profile will automatically populate in your new application! The best part is that once an employer requests a writing sample from one of your applications, we’ll send them directly over to a personalized URL where they can review it without having access to other parts of your profile. How cool is that?

Search for a job you want

If you’re new to freelancing, Indeed can be a helpful resource. The site contains thousands of jobs from thousands of employers and is updated regularly. This can be a great place to start your search if nothing else, it gives you access to some job descriptions that won’t necessarily end up on your dream list of writing gigs. Still, before you dig in, it’s important that you know exactly what kind of work you want. For example: Do you want long-term freelance writing jobs? Do you want temporary or contractual work? Do you want something part-time or full-time? And so on. It’s also a good idea to make sure you have relevant skills for any particular position you find (for instance, if you find an opening at an ecommerce company, make sure your experience includes content creation geared toward online shoppers). While we all want to believe that our passion will land us a job with ease, remember that passion alone isn’t enough; having specific skills and experience are critical when looking for writing jobs online.

Click Apply

The best way to apply for jobs at Indeed is by clicking Apply on a listing. This will immediately take you into your job seeker account, where you can review that specific job and its requirements. If your qualifications match what they’re looking for, click Apply again and we’ll send you over directly to the posting. Keep in mind that it may not be necessary to click Apply every time if you have saved your information with us we’lll recognize you and take you right into our system!

Prepare for interviews/tests (if there are any)

It’s likely that you’ll have at least one interview before you get a job. Be prepared by taking mock interviews with a friend or your mentor and make sure you know exactly what to expect. Ask questions and come up with specific answers so if they ask something like, what was your biggest challenge as an intern? You have already thought of a couple great answers and are ready with them when it comes time. Even if there isn’t an interview involved, there may be tests like competency tests (for IT jobs), writing tests, etc.

Get hired

Getting hired at a freelance writing job starts with, obviously, applying for it. On Indeed, you’ll see there are many different kinds of jobs (full-time, part-time and so on). When you’re ready to apply for a job you like, click Apply Now. Next, fill out your profile as thoroughly as possible—and no, we aren’t referring to just entering information in boxes. In order to show hiring managers that you are truly interested in them and their company (and thus more deserving of an interview), go into detail about your skills and how they align with their position by providing an Include Profile section. It’s also smart to provide a detailed explanation in each resume field where appropriate.
