Some of the student in my cohort were asking why do we have to reference academic work, I thought to share some reasons one need to reference his or her academic work. But before going ahead I would like to talk a bit about referencing.
What is Reference?
Reference to academic literature is a process by which when we read a quote or article, we re-write the quote in our own words. It means acknowledge the source of information. It is a good way to complete your academic work on your own initiative, truly and in an appropriate academic way, using good referencing and acknowledging all of your sources. In order to get good academic practices, it includes:
- Making your own personal evaluation of academic issues
- Searching for relevant information and research from academics in your particular subject of study
- Analysing and going through existing concepts and theories
- A way of showing that you understand the main literature
- A way of putting your own arguments across for others to see
- Making sure you do proper research about you subject
- Following the law and make sure you reference all work that you completed.
- A way to prohibit plagiarism
- Making your own voice heard and sharing ideas
- Make your own decision and examine your work.
- One that lay down strong link for improving knowledge. It makes provision for the theory development,
- It shows area where we have a sound idea and other area that need more work input
- It creates a link to pass on important information
- It allows other to access some else work
- It shows how professional and academic that you are
This is a way show that you understood what you read by activities such as listing, defining, describing.
