A lot of my work colleague here in the UK who are from Nigeria were asking  how to register for NIN outside Nigeria and I must say NIN has been extremely beneficial to all Nigerians. That is why the government has implemented a variety of measures in order to gain access to all of the activities of all citizens in the country. Following this, Nigerians in the Diaspora are not left behind, as there are means to have it done there as well. This article explains what the NIN is for?, the benefits NIN provides?, and how to get one if you live outside of Nigeria?. So let’s get started.

What exactly is NIN?

A person’s National Identification Number (NIN) is a series of numbers assigned to them after they have successfully enrolled. Enrolment entails recording an individual’s demographic information as well as the capture of ten (10) fingerprints, a head-to-shoulder facial photograph, and a digital signature, all of which are used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to ensure that the same information has not been entered previously.

The data is then stored with a unique NIN that was assigned to it once this (de-duplication) process is done. A person’s NIN cannot be used again after it has been provided to them (that is, it cannot be issued to another person even if the previous person is dead). The NIN is a number that is used to link all of a person’s records in a database and to verify their identification.

NIN’S CHARACTERISTICS

  • The National Identification Number (NIN) is made up of 11 non-intelligible numbers that are assigned to a person at the end of their enrolment in the National Identity Database (NIDB).
  • When an individual passes away, his or her NIN is retired once a death certificate is given to the Commission and the individual’s death is confirmed.
  • All citizens and legal residents of Nigeria, starting at the age of zero (birth), are able to apply for NINs.
  • Individuals’ NINs should be tightly guarded and not disclosed to the general public unless requested by competent authorities (for example, it should not be posted on social media or printed with contact information on business cards or other office stationery).
