The reaction of a mixture of iron fillings and sulphur, some element when mixed together react with each other to form a new compound in chemical change, whilst some element when mixed together it will rather stay the same without forming a new compound in physical change. In this experiment we are using magnetic method as a way of separation as iron fillings are good magnetic conduct while as sulphur is not.

- Iron fillings(grey in colour)

METHODS
About a spoonful each of iron fillings and sulphur were measured and place on a piece of paper, the content was mixed together with the spoon and a bar of magnet was place underneath the paper that contain the mixture, I witnessed the iron fillings was attracted together (pic b) to the magnet ,then the element was re mixed and pour into the test tube and re heat the tube with Bunsen burner until it glows red ,then the tube was allowed to cool down and the contain was knocked out onto the sheet of paper.
RESULT
Iron +sulphur=iron sulphide
Fe + s=Fes
CONCLUSION
- When iron fillings and sulphur powder are mixed, both retain their properties.it means they have not undergone any chemical reaction Therefore, mixing of iron and sulphur is physical change (PIC A).
- When iron fillings and sulphur powder are mixed and heated they undergo a chemical reaction and form iron sulphide(Fes)(pic d).It is a new substance which has properties entirely different from iron and sulphur .Therefore heating of mixture of iron and sulphur powder is a chemical change
- Iron sulphide is not magnetic and its appearance in colour is black which was different to the initial colour of iron fillings grey in colour and sulphur was yellow in colour.
- Iron is a mineral element used the body in the production of red blood cell (haemoglobin).
- Lack of iron can cause shortness of breath and weakness in pregnancy.
- Sulphur is a macro mineral that you will find in the cell of the body, it play important role in biochemical reaction for example synthesis of protein and enzyme reaction
- Sulphur protect the human joints
- Sulphur plays important role in the production of collagen
- Sulphur maintains the balance of oxygen in the body and keeps skin, hair and nails healthy.
- Iron sulphide is used to treat anaemia
- Iron sulphide help to increase the red blood cell count so that the normal oxygen can be delivered to the lung
- Iron sulphide is used in our spleen to protect us from pathogens that might want to crawl into our spleen from our pancreas.
