Getting/renewing your Nigerian passport is not an easy task especially those living in the UK. Due its stressful process, some people have given up on getting their passport renewed. They’d rather use visa on arrival.

However, this is not always the case. So long you have all the necessary requirements, you should be able to get your passport in 5 working days. Below, I will highlight on the few things you must know before putting in your application.

  1. All applications are made online. You don’t necessarily have to wait till the passport date expires, you can apply even if your passport is not yet due to expire anytime soon.
  2. You are required to pay a sum of $142. Bear in mind that the name on the bank you used in making the payment must be the same with the name on your application form.
  3. You will need a printer to print out your application form and appointment form, as they will need to see this by the entrance door before letting you into the embassy.
  4. Make sure your National Identity Number (NIN), also be sure this has been confirmed and verified.
  5. Make sure the details on your NIN matches the details on your passport.
  6. DO NOT give money to anyone both prior, during or after the application or your embassy visit.
  7. Book your biometric appointment.
  8. Buy postal order from post office
  9. Enclose a RETURN envelope with your name and address on it, so they can use this to send your new passport back to you. N.B if you are making more than one application, make sure you put the name and address of every other person on the return envelope. Whatever the number of applications you are making, the names and addresses should all be written boldly on one return envelope.

In a nutshell:

  1. Fill the application form
  2. Make payments
  3. Print all the necessary documents
  4. Book your biometric appointment
  5. Buy your postal order
  6. Enclose a return envelope

Just to add, you don’t have to go on the exact time of your application as they don’t follow the timing. Just go on your appointment day, you can be there at 10am and get it done even if your appointment time is 1pm. Make sure you photocopy all that needs photocopying as you will have to walk a long distance before seeing where to photocopy and your Nigerian embassy staff wont bother to help. Also if you have a child and that’s the first Nigerian passport they are getting, you will need a copy of the front cover page of both parents’ passports.
